About
Antigone was the daughter of King Oedipus. In Sophocles’ play she defies King Creon and her city to do what she believes to be right. She does it out of love and to punish her Creon orders her buried alive. In the 20th Century Oedipus was not only a mythical king but a a psychoanalytic complex, the word which represented the suppression of our unconscious desires. Now we are all the sons and daughters of Freud, just as Antigone was the daughter of Oedipus.
The X is for Malcolm.
This is Jean Cocteau’s drawing of Antigone and King Creon.
